Bob Montgomery, 82, completed a remarkable 3,300-mile charity bike ride across Australia before unexpectedly passing away just one day later, leaving behind a lasting legacy of generosity and determination.
An 82-year-old Australian cyclist who completed a 3,300-mile (5,300km) charity ride across the country has died just one day after crossing the finish line.
Bob Montgomery passed away unexpectedly but peacefully after completing what he called his “One Last Ride,” a six-week cycling journey from Broome in Western Australia to Bowral, south-west of Sydney. His family announced his death in a heartfelt statement shared on social media.
His wife of 59 years, Jenny, was by his side when he died.
“Bob’s passing was unexpected but peaceful,” his family said. “He was still passionately sharing his message only hours before his passing.”
Montgomery undertook the cross-country challenge alongside his 18-year-old grandson, Tom Malcolm. Together, they raised around A$105,000 (US$74,000) for MND NSW, an Australian charity supporting people living with motor neurone disease (MND).
The fundraising ride held deep personal meaning for Montgomery. He had previously lost a cousin to the disease and had spent years supporting research and patient care through long-distance cycling events.
This was his sixth charity ride for MND NSW. Across his previous fundraising campaigns, he had already raised nearly A$300,000.
“I have seen family and friends suffer. It’s heartbreaking,” Montgomery wrote on his fundraising page before setting off on the journey.
The pair arrived in Bowral on Sunday to a warm welcome from family, friends and members of the local community, who gathered to celebrate the achievement with loud applause.
Speaking after completing the ride, Montgomery said the experience was about much more than cycling.
“There are so many stories and so many people we met along the way who put their hands into their pockets to throw some cash in, which is fantastic,” he said, adding that he also enjoyed “a beer or two” during the stopovers.
His grandson continued cycling to Sydney the following day, where relatives gathered once again to celebrate the successful fundraiser.

However, shortly after the family celebration, Montgomery suffered a medical episode and died, according to MND NSW Chief Executive Liam O’Meara.
O’Meara described Montgomery as a devoted supporter whose commitment had touched countless lives.
“We are deeply saddened by Bob’s passing,” he said. “He was a cherished friend and a tireless supporter of MND NSW.”
Montgomery’s determination to keep raising awareness for motor neurone disease, even into his eighties, earned admiration across Australia. His final ride not only raised vital funds but also inspired communities along thousands of miles of road.
His family said he remained committed to his mission until the very end, spending his final hours encouraging support for a cause that had shaped so much of his life.
While his journey has come to an end, the impact of his generosity and dedication will continue through the people he inspired and the lives his fundraising efforts helped support.
