The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria has officially asked top national security agencies to carry out a fresh, independent investigation into serious allegations linking Senator Shehu Buba Umar to acts of banditry and terrorism.
The big Islamic organization made its position known on Monday, September 7, 2026, through a formal press statement issued in Kaduna State.
The council addressed its official demand directly to the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Department of State Services.
Senator Shehu Buba Umar, who represents Bauchi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has faced circulating social media videos and public claims alleging that suspected bandit leaders visited his residence and received support.
The main reason why the Islamic council is demanding this thorough security investigation is that national security is too important to be used for political fights or personal attacks.
Recently, viral videos and online interviews showed individuals claiming that criminals were associated with the lawmaker.
While the council previously defended the senator, it now wants the nation’s highest intelligence agencies to clear the air publicly so that Nigerians can know the true facts.
The council stressed that if the senator worked with security agencies in the past on peaceful strategies, the government must clarify that relationship so politicians do not use security matters as weapons to destroy reputations before elections.
The council urged all political leaders, community groups, and media platforms to handle delicate security reports with great care, truth, and patriotism.

Explaining why government security offices must step in immediately to clarify the situation, the leadership of the council called for total openness.
Calling on top intelligence institutions to speak out, the Secretary General of the council, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, stated that the authorities should “swiftly, thoroughly and independently investigate the renewed allegations”.
Warning politicians and the public against turning serious security matters into dirty political games, the Islamic body emphasized fair treatment and justice for all citizens.
Setting out the proper way to handle national safety concerns, Nafiu Baba Ahmad added that “security matters must be handled with patriotism, facts and a genuine commitment to justice”.
Senator Shehu Buba has strongly denied all allegations, calling the videos false and fabricated by political opponents to ruin his name.
