Security forces repelled a terrorist attack on Borno APC candidate Mustapha Gubio’s convoy with no lives lost.
Suspected Boko Haram terrorists launched a dangerous attack on the convoy carrying the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate for Borno State, Mustapha Gubio.
The sudden attack happened on Thursday afternoon, September 3, 2026, around 2:30 pm along the busy Kareto Damasak highway located in the northern part of Borno State.
Political leaders, party members, government stakeholders, and security officers were travelling together in a long line of vehicles heading towards Mobbar Local Government Area.
However, security teams attached to the convoy quickly responded, fought back with force, and drove the attackers deep into the surrounding bush without losing any lives.
The main reason why Mustapha Gubio and his campaign team were travelling on that highway was to conduct a thank you tour across northern communities following his recent victory as the consensus governorship candidate in the party primary election.
As the entourage reached Kareto community, hidden criminals suddenly fired roadside explosives and rocket-propelled grenades at the moving vehicles to destroy the convoy.
Despite heavy gunshots ringing out in the area, the joint security team comprising soldiers, police officers, DSS personnel, and local vigilantes stood firm, protected the politicians, and safely escorted everyone out of danger.
Relieved members of the entourage thanked God and the brave security officers for acting fast to save their lives during the violent incident.
Describing the terrifying moments when bullets and explosives hit their convoy, an eyewitness who survived the ambush shared how close they came to danger.
Recalling the terrifying ambush on the highway, an entourage member who escaped unharmed stated that “it was a terrifying moment for us; we came under heavy attacks by terrorists yesterday”.

Giving more details about the weapons used by the insurgents, the insider source added that “the terrorists fired several rocket propelled grenades on our convoy, which was also followed by sporadic shooting. Luckily, our security agencies repelled the attacks. Police armoured vehicles were damaged, but there were no casualties”.
Confirming the security operation and successful rescue effort, Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, explained how police tactical teams secured the road.
Explaining how officers handled the emergency, Ani Iniedu stated that “police tactical operatives successfully counter engaged suspected terrorists who attacked a convoy along the Kareto, Damasak Road with an IED and rocket propelled grenades”.
Reassuring the public about the safety of everyone on the journey, Ani Iniedu added that “the tactical team forced the terrorists to retreat into the surrounding bush and subsequently scanned and cleared the immediate axis to neutralise secondary explosive threats. The convoy, conveying a gubernatorial aspirant, government officials and political stakeholders, was safely evacuated to a secure location with no casualties recorded among members of the entourage”. Police tactical teams cleared the highway of explosive threats before allowing normal road traffic to continue.
