Ikire killings : Adeleke Orders Probe Into Deadly Violence

Questions are still hanging over the deadly violence that rocked Ikire, Osun State, on August 24. Now, Governor Ademola Adeleke wants answers.

The governor has ordered an investigation into the killings at Naira and Kobo Junction and the nearby motor park area in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area. According to Daily Post, Adeleke established a Coroner Inquest and Panel of Inquiry through an Executive Order.

The panel is expected to begin sitting on Monday, August 31. Its main task is to establish what happened before, during and after the violence. It will also identify those who died and examine the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Beyond that, the panel will investigate the roles played by security personnel during the incident. It will determine whether live ammunition or other weapons were used and whether their use followed the law.

The investigation will also examine the actions of political actors, transport union members, security officials and other people connected to the incident. Adeleke wants the panel to determine whether any action or failure to act contributed to the deaths and injuries.

The governor’s decision comes as different accounts of the Ikire violence continue to emerge. The police said officers were responding to a distress call when they came under attack.

The Osun State Police Command subsequently announced the arrest of four suspects over the incident. Police Commissioner Ibrahim Zungura alleged that one of the attackers seized an AK-47 rifle from a police officer.

He said the suspect later used the rifle to shoot at people. The police reported that two civilians were killed during the violence, while three officers sustained injuries.

However, relatives of the victims have disputed aspects of the police account. They have called for an independent investigation to establish how their loved ones died.

Senator Olalere Oyewumi has also denied allegations linking him to the violence. The Osun West senator accused the police of conducting a one-sided investigation.

He instead called for an independent judicial inquiry into the incident. With the conflicting accounts still unresolved, Adeleke’s panel now faces the task of finding out what actually happened.

Its findings could shed light on the events that turned a busy area in Ikire into the scene of deadly violence. The panel could also determine whether individuals or groups should be held responsible for the deaths and injuries.

For the families who lost loved ones, the investigation may provide answers to questions that have remained unanswered since the incident. The inquiry is scheduled to commence on August 31.
