A routine night at the IMAX Cinema in Lekki, Lagos State, reportedly turned deadly after a man armed with a machete and knife attacked security personnel.
According to Instablog Naija, the incident happened on Friday night, August 29. The man reportedly tried to enter the cinema while carrying the weapons.
Security guards at the entrance reportedly stopped him from gaining access to the premises. The confrontation soon became violent as the man allegedly turned on the security personnel.
Eyewitnesses said the man was behaving erratically before the attack. He also reportedly appeared to be under the influence of drugs. However, the reason he attempted to enter the cinema with the weapons remains unclear.
Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, confirmed the incident to Instablog Naija. She provided details about what happened after the man was stopped by security.
According to the police spokesperson, the man appeared to be destitute. He allegedly became aggressive after security personnel prevented him from entering the cinema.
The situation reportedly escalated when the man attacked the guards with the weapons he was carrying. One security guard was allegedly stabbed during the confrontation. He reportedly sustained serious injuries and later died.
Another security personnel was also injured in the attack. The incident reportedly caused panic among people at the scene. As the confrontation continued, people around the cinema reportedly moved in to stop the attacker.
The man was eventually overpowered and mobbed by people at the scene. He later died from injuries sustained during the incident. The deadly confrontation has since prompted a police investigation.
Authorities are working to establish the events that led to the attack and what happened during the ensuing chaos. Meanwhile, the cinema’s Chief Security Officer is currently in police custody.
The police are also reviewing CCTV footage from the premises as part of their investigation. The recordings could help investigators establish how the incident started and what happened during the confrontation.
