Richard O’Sullivan, the beloved British actor who brought effortless charm and laughter to television screens for decades, has died at the age of 82.
He passed away surrounded by close family at Brinsworth House, the Royal Variety Charity’s care home in West London, where he had lived for the past 23 years.
O’Sullivan was best known for his iconic role as Robin Tripp in the hit 1970s sitcom Man About the House and its successful spin-off, Robin’s Nest. He also starred in other cherished series like Doctor at Large, Dick Turpin, and the 1980s comedy Me and My Girl.
In a statement, Giles Cooper of the Royal Variety Charity honored his legacy, calling him a “master of effortless charm and impeccable comic timing, bringing pure warmth, wit, and unforgettable joy to millions of living rooms as a true giant of British television.”
His son, James O’Sullivan, shared a deeply personal tribute, noting that his father was just as funny and charming in real life as he appeared on screen. “Always kind-spirited, good-humoured, a doting grandfather and a wonderful dad, I will miss him dearly,” James said. He added that he was fortunate to witness his father’s incredible talent through the countless reruns that made him a respected and loved figure.

Man About the House was a groundbreaking show for its time. It followed a man sharing a London flat with two single women, a storyline that pushed the boundaries of 1970s television. To avoid being rejected by censors or deemed inappropriate for prime-time viewing, the show used a clever comedic workaround: the two women told their strict landlords that their male flatmate was gay. Robin kept up the pretence, creating the gentle, hilarious comedy that made the show a massive hit with family audiences.
For over half a century, Richard O’Sullivan made people smile. He navigated the changing tides of television with grace and a reliable wink to the camera. Though the sets have been struck and the scripts put away, the joy he brought to everyday homes will remain long after the final credits roll.
