Grand Theft Auto 6 has reportedly cost over $1 billion to make, making it the most expensive video game in history.
A brand new report reveals that developing the next Grand Theft Auto game has cost more than almost any other game in history.
The big gaming company Take Two Interactive and creator Rockstar Games have reportedly spent between one billion and one and a half billion dollars so far to build the game, named Grand Theft Auto 6.
Financial experts and gaming analysts shared these large figures after reviewing public company filings and industry reports in May 2026.
The game, which takes place in a giant modern city based on Miami called Vice City, has taken over eight years of continuous work by thousands of workers across different countries.
The main reason why Grand Theft Auto 6 is so expensive is because of how big and complex it is. Most big video games today cost around 200 million dollars to make.
For example, popular titles like The Last of Us Part 2 and Horizon Forbidden West cost about 200 million dollars each, while Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War cost 700 million dollars across its full life.
But Grand Theft Auto 6 is completely different because the creators built brand new technology, hired thousands of staff members for many years, and paid for huge marketing campaigns.
The makers want the game world to look extremely real, with smart computer people walking in the streets, changing weather, and highly detailed cars and buildings.

Because of this giant price tag, rival game companies are watching closely to see if the investment pays off. The game’s owners hope to sell tens of millions of copies very quickly to get their money back.
Many analysts believe the game could make over 1 billion dollars in sales in just its first few months on store shelves.
When asked directly about the massive money spent on making the project, Take Two Chief Executive Officer Strauss Zelnick admitted that the company went all out to support the development team.
Speaking about the budget during a business interview, Strauss Zelnick said that “it was expensive,” but explained that the company gives its game makers “unlimited financial, creative human resources and then they aim to deliver perfection”.
When discussing how much players will pay to buy the game, Strauss Zelnick added that “consumers need to feel like the thing itself is amazing and the price they were charged was fair for what they got”. Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to break all records as the most expensive entertainment product ever created.
