Aloy Ejimakor, one of the lawyers representing the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has warned the Federal Government against the continued imprisonment of popular leaders, saying such decisions can sometimes create bigger problems for those in power.
According to Daily Post, Ejimakor made the remark while reacting to the situation surrounding Kanu, whose legal battle has remained a subject of public debate across the country.
According to the lawyer, history has shown that governments do not always succeed in weakening popular leaders by putting them behind bars. In some cases, he said, the imprisonment of such figures can draw more attention to them and strengthen the support they already enjoy.
He argued that the Federal Government should reflect on past experiences involving influential leaders and consider the possible consequences of handling politically sensitive matters through prolonged imprisonment. Ejimakor’s comments come as calls for a political solution to Kanu’s case continue to grow from different groups and individuals.
The IPOB leader has remained one of the most controversial and closely watched figures in Nigeria, with his case attracting strong reactions from supporters, political leaders and civil society organisations.
