The Nigerian government launches C.L.I.C.K.D., enabling citizens to acquire laptops and smartphones on affordable credit terms.
In a major bid to bridge the national digital divide and drive economic empowerment, the Nigerian Federal Government has officially opened applications for its flagship device financing initiative. Rolled out under the Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices (C.L.I.C.K.D.) Programme, the national scheme allows working citizens, students, and tech talents to acquire smartphones, laptops, and tablets through structured, low-interest credit rather than heavy upfront cash payments. By partnering with local assembly plants and financial institutions, the government aims to put high-performance digital tools directly into the hands of millions, enabling remote work, online learning, and business expansion.
Examining what the application process entails, eligible applicants simply need to complete a straightforward online expression-of-interest form. Prospective beneficiaries log onto the platform and select their employment status, ranging from salary earners and freelancers to students, business owners, and NYSC members. Applicants then specify their required device, state their monthly income tier, and indicate their primary reason for needing the hardware, such as software development, remote work, or content creation. Crucially, participants in tech talent pipelines like the Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program, ALX, Andela, and AltSchool can link their profiles to receive prioritized assessment. Once submitted, the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) and its partner financial institutions evaluate the user’s details to disburse devices with flexible repayment plans.
This nationwide digital credit initiative covers all 36 states of Nigeria alongside the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The application process is fully digitized and accessible online from any internet-connected smartphone or computer across the country. Physical device distributions are managed through regional hubs and verified vendor outlets, with initial physical handovers commencing in Abuja before expanding to state capitals nationwide. The Federal Government formally opened the application portal on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. The rollout builds on a successful pilot phase that supplied smartphones to over 1,000 workers, with the new phase immediately targeting over 15,000 beneficiaries before scaling up further throughout the year.
