Ogun 2027: Hunye Refuses to Back Down Over APC Ticket

Abayomi Hunye is still challenging Senator Solomon Adeola over the APC governorship ticket in Ogun State.

The dispute is adding tension to the party’s preparations for the 2027 election. It has also raised questions about how the APC plans to manage its internal differences before the campaign gathers pace.

Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, emerged as the APC governorship candidate after the party’s primary. The result, however, did not end the contest. Hunye has rejected the outcome and continued to question the process that produced Adeola. He has also taken his grievances to court.

According to Daily Post, Hunye’s challenge centres on the conduct of the primary and the events that surrounded the contest. The former aspirant has questioned why he was allowed to take part in the process if the party had already settled on Adeola.

Hunye reportedly paid N50 million to obtain the APC nomination form. He also went through the screening process before the primary. For him, those steps make the circumstances around the contest difficult to ignore. Rather than accepting the result, Hunye has chosen to continue his fight through the legal process.

The APC leadership, however, has taken a different position. The party recognises Adeola as its candidate for the Ogun governorship election. It has also rejected Hunye’s claim to the ticket. That has created a clear divide between the party’s official position and Hunye’s continued challenge.

Adeola now has the support of the APC structure as he prepares for the election. Hunye, meanwhile, is seeking to overturn the process that led to Adeola’s emergence. The disagreement has also produced reactions from APC members in different parts of Ogun State.

In Ipokia Local Government Area, party leaders recently distanced themselves from Hunye’s activities. They also reaffirmed their support for Adeola as the APC candidate. The development is another sign that Adeola has strong support within the party structure. Still, it has not ended Hunye’s challenge.

The former aspirant remains determined to pursue the matter. His continued opposition means the APC must deal with the dispute while also preparing for the wider political contest. That could become important as Ogun 2027 draws closer.

The APC will need to maintain unity if it wants to approach the election from a position of strength. Internal disagreements can create problems when party members begin to work against one another. For Adeola, the immediate advantage is clear.

He has the backing of the party leadership and can focus on building his campaign. He can also rely on the party’s existing structure across the state. Hunye’s position is different. He does not have the party’s official backing, but he has refused to abandon his challenge.

His legal action keeps the dispute alive and leaves room for further developments. The situation also puts the APC in a delicate position. The party must defend its recognised candidate while dealing with an aspirant who insists that the process needs to be examined.

If both sides fail to reach an understanding, the dispute could remain a talking point throughout the early stages of the 2027 race. For now, Adeola remains the APC’s recognised governorship candidate in Ogun State. Hunye, however, is still fighting the outcome of the primary.
