French AI biotech company Owkin has signed a licensing agreement with Boehringer Ingelheim that will give the German drugmaker access to its AI research platform and patient data to help discover new medicines for cancer and immune-related diseases.
AI healthcare company Owkin announced on Wednesday that it has signed a major licensing deal with the German drugmaker Boehringer Ingelheim. The agreement gives the pharmaceutical giant full access to Owkin’s AI research platform, known as “K Pro,” along with a vast library of patient data. The clear goal is to speed up the discovery of new treatments for cancer and immune-related diseases.
This is not Owkin’s first time working with industry heavyweights. In fact, the company is quickly becoming a go-to partner for big pharma. AstraZeneca licensed the exact same AI technology back in May, and Sanofi recently expanded its own partnership with a massive five-year agreement in June.
The new pact with Boehringer builds directly on a successful pilot project the two companies ran together in 2025. Thomas Clozel, the CEO of Owkin, told reporters that during that initial test, his team used real patient tumor samples and related biological datasets to help Boehringer figure out which potential drug targets were actually worth pursuing.
Instead of spending years in a lab guessing which biological pathway might fight a disease, the AI looks at the complex human data and points the scientists in the right direction.
Under this new, expanded agreement, Owkin will license complex, multimodal oncology data directly to Boehringer. On top of that, the AI company will generate entirely new data specifically focused on immunology. To pull this off, Owkin relies on its global network of hospitals and clinics to license, source, and generate real-world patient data. They feed this massive amount of information into their systems to find hidden patterns that a human researcher might easily miss.
The two companies chose not to share the exact financial details of the agreement. But the message to the rest of the medical world is loud and clear.
The traditional way of building new drugs is changing fast. By combining real human biology with advanced machine learning, these companies are trying to cut years off the development timeline and avoid costly dead ends. For the patients sitting in waiting rooms, hoping for a breakthrough in cancer or immune care, that saved time is the most valuable thing of all. The machines are not replacing the doctors. They are just helping them see the cure a little bit sooner.
