Sri Lanka is deploying Air Force drones to hunt mosquito breeding sites as it battles its worst dengue outbreak in nearly a decade.
A high-tech aerial offensive has officially launched across South Asia as public health officials turn to military technology to combat a rapidly escalating medical emergency. In an effort to curb a severe public health crisis that is overwhelming local hospitals, government authorities have deployed specialized military equipment to hunt down an invisible enemy hiding on urban rooftops. The innovative airborne strategy marks one of the most aggressive technological interventions ever used by the island nation to stop a deadly insect-borne epidemic in its tracks.
This high-tech health battle can be easily understood by breaking it down: disease is threatening public health, the aerial operations are taking place, the military intervention began, and traditional control methods are no longer enough. The government is fighting dengue fever, a painful and potentially fatal viral infection spread to humans through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. The drone surveillance and cleanup efforts are centered on areas where population density is highest, targeting major urban centers including the national capital of Colombo and the heavily impacted northern coastal district of Negombo. The military-led drone initiative was officially launched in late June 2026 and ramped up significantly throughout July as emergency hospital admissions skyrocketed past 77,000 nationwide cases. The urgent reason authorities took to the skies with Air Force drones relies on a challenging combination of severe weather and disease severity: massive rain pools left behind by monsoon storms and lingering debris from recent cyclones created millions of hidden breeding grounds in gutters and high-rise rooftops that human inspection teams simply could not reach on foot.
Dengue fever, often called “breakbone fever” due to the intense, severe joint and muscle pain it inflicts on patients, causes high body temperatures, severe headaches, vomiting, and skin rashes. Health officials warn that this year’s outbreak is particularly dangerous because nearly 75 percent of tested cases belong to DENV-2, a significantly more aggressive and rapidly spreading strain of the virus. Public health teams running out of physical hospital beds have been forced to set up temporary emergency wards, while doctors advise patients with milder symptoms to isolate and recover safely at home.

The Air Force drones fly over residential neighborhoods, commercial centers, and schools to capture high-resolution thermal and visual camera footage of stagnant water trapped in discarded tires, open tanks, and clogged roof gutters. Once a high-risk breeding site is spotted from the air, ground teams consisting of police officers, health inspectors, and military personnel are dispatched directly to the property. Property owners are given strict instructions to clear the standing water immediately or face heavy legal fines. Having already inspected thousands of premises and eliminated over 11,000 active mosquito breeding spots in July alone, officials hope this blend of drone technology and strict ground enforcement will successfully flatten the infection curve before the next monsoon season hits.
