Ebonyi Police arrest fake lawyer Ugwumba Enyinnaya for pretending to practice law for over 11 years and taking ₦650,000.

Police officers in Ebonyi State have caught and arrested a man named Ugwumba Enyinnaya who has been pretending to be a qualified lawyer and doing legal work for more than eleven years.

The police spokesman for Ebonyi State, SP Joshua Ukandu, announced the arrest to the public on Tuesday. He explained that police officers caught the suspect after a resident wrote a formal complaint letter to report that Enyinnaya took money from him under false claims.

The entire trouble started when a victim named Chukwu David gave the suspect the sum of ₦650,000 in March 2026.

Enyinnaya told David that he was a trained lawyer with many years of court experience and promised that he would help him process and secure government approval to name a street in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

After collecting the money, the suspect failed to deliver the promised results, prompting the victim to report the matter to the police command for proper investigation.

Police officers quickly began investigating the petition and discovered that the suspect had been parading himself and taking money from innocent citizens as a lawyer across the state, even though he never went to law school or qualified to practice law.

When police officers questioned him at the station, Enyinnaya confessed to the crime and admitted that he was truly not a lawyer.

Following his confession, police officers went to search the suspect’s apartment to gather evidence. During the search, officers recovered many official items that the suspect used to deceive people into believing he was a real legal practitioner.

Among the recovered items was an official Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seal, a framed photograph showing the suspect dressed in full lawyer robes, and fake university degree certificates for Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) bearing his name and the name of Enugu State University of Science and Technology.

Police officers also found a barrister’s black gown and white wig, along with various official land and property papers he had written for clients, including powers of attorney, land transfer documents, and court papers he had collected from various court premises over the past eleven years.

Police authorities confirmed that the investigation has been completed and the suspect has already been charged to court to face full trial for his actions.

The police command warned members of the public to always double-check the credentials of anyone claiming to offer professional legal services before paying money or handing over important land and property documents to avoid falling victim to fraudsters.
