Nigeria is looking to deepen its partnership with China as part of efforts to improve the country’s power infrastructure and address longstanding electricity challenges.
The Federal Government said stronger collaboration with China could help accelerate investments in power generation, transmission, and distribution projects, while also supporting the modernization of Nigeria’s electricity sector.
The move aligns with ongoing efforts to expand access to reliable electricity and strengthen the national grid.
Nigeria Eyes More Chinese Investment in Power Sector
Officials highlighted China’s role in several major infrastructure projects across Nigeria, including energy-related developments.
Existing cooperation between both countries has contributed to projects such as the Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Plant and transmission network upgrades, which have helped improve electricity infrastructure in parts of the country.
The government believes increased Chinese investment and technical support could help bridge Nigeria’s power deficit, enhance grid stability, and support industrial growth.
Focus on Technology Transfer and Local Capacity
Beyond funding, Nigerian authorities are seeking greater technology transfer and skills development as part of future partnerships. The government wants foreign-backed projects to contribute to local capacity building by training Nigerian professionals and supporting indigenous participation in the power value chain.
Officials also stressed the importance of ensuring that infrastructure partnerships deliver long-term benefits for the country while supporting economic development and job creation.

Improving electricity supply remains one of Nigeria’s biggest economic priorities. Frequent power shortages continue to affect businesses and households, forcing many companies to rely on alternative power sources.
