The 39-year-old legend has officially announced his retirement from international football. In a heartfelt statement posted to Instagram, Messi revealed that the decision was agonizing, but ultimately unavoidable.
He leaves behind a staggering legacy: 125 goals in 207 appearances, making him Argentina’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player. He gave them the ultimate prize, captaining the side to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022.
“Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply,” Messi wrote. “I’ve given it my all, I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some really great young players coming through behind me who deserve their chance.”
The timing of this farewell carries a heavy, human weight. Messi admitted that he first drafted the retirement message on July 21, just two days after Argentina lost to Spain in this summer’s World Cup final.
Since then, his personal world has shifted entirely. His father, Jorge, passed away at the age of 68 following a long illness.
“Today, after what happened with my dad, I’m even more convinced than before,” Messi added, noting that the recent grief has only solidified his resolve to step away from the national setup.
