Three people were killed and four wounded after a shooting erupted at the Bite of Seattle food festival near the Space Needle.
A festive summer gathering turned into panic and heartbreak in downtown Seattle when gunfire broke out at one of the city’s most cherished annual events. What was supposed to be a celebratory weekend of food, music, and community joy suddenly shattered as festival attendees found themselves running for safety amidst loud bursts of gunshots. The violent incident claimed three lives and left four others injured, terrifying thousands of families, tourists, and local vendors who had gathered to enjoy the festivities.
The tragedy unfolded at the sprawling Seattle Center civic complex, located directly beside the city’s world-famous Space Needle. The popular tourist hub was hosting the Bite of Seattle food festival, an iconic community tradition running since 1982 that typically draws upwards of 350,000 visitors over three days. The gunfire erupted around 6:00 PM local time on Sunday, July 26, 2026, right near the Sue Bird Court and Thomas Street area within the festival grounds. Panic quickly spread through the crowded pathways, prompting families to seek shelter inside the nearby Space Needle lobby while others rushed out onto surrounding streets.
Law enforcement authorities reported that the fatal shooting began when two armed individuals engaged in a sudden, violent dispute and began firing shots at each other in the middle of the crowd. Quick-acting police officers stationed at the event rushed directly toward the gunfire and confronted one of the shooters, taking him into custody and recovering two firearms from the scene. Two victims died at the scene despite emergency resuscitation efforts, while a 56-year-old woman later succumbed to her injuries after being rushed to Harborview Medical Center. Four additional victims, including a two-year-old boy, a 23-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, and a 40-year-old woman, sustained gunshot wounds and were treated at regional hospitals in stable condition.
