Two Arrested in London Over Suspected Iranian Intelligence Links

Two people have been arrested in London on suspicion of assisting Iran’s intelligence service, the Metropolitan Police has confirmed.

A 60-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman were taken into custody on Wednesday as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected National Security Act offenses. Both suspects have since been released on bail under strict conditions until late October.

Police were quick to clarify the scope of the operation, noting that the arrests are not connected to any of the recent incidents or attacks targeting Jewish and Iranian communities across the capital earlier this year. The latest custody follows two separate property searches carried out in north and north-west London back in June.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, addressed the public’s likely reaction to the news. She acknowledged that the arrests “will come as a concern to some members of the public,” but stressed that she does “not believe there to be any imminent threat to the wider public.”

However, she pointed to a troubling trend in the broader security landscape. “We’ve seen a marked increase in the tempo of our work linked to national security and state threats over the past year, and this investigation is a continuation of that,” Flanagan said. She added a firm warning that if police suspect any activity could threaten the safety of the UK, they “will not hesitate to take action.”

With the UK’s terror threat level remaining at “severe,” authorities are urging the public to stay vigilant.
