A farmer in Plateau State suffered a horrific attack as herders chopped off his hand for declining to help lift a fallen cow.
A hardworking local farmer in Plateau State suffered a horrific, life changing injury after violent cattle herders chopped off his hand with a sharp cutlass because he refused to help them lift a heavy cow that fell on his farm.
The painful and shocking attack happened on Friday, September 11, 2026, while the farmer was working peacefully on his agricultural field located in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The young farmer was clearing his farm when a group of armed herders came onto his property with their cattle. While grazing, one of the cattle fell down on the ground, and the herders demanded that the farmer stop his work immediately and assist them in lifting the cow back onto its feet.
The main reason why the argument turned into a bloody attack is that the farmer politely told the herders he could not stop his farm work, especially since the cattle were already damaging his growing crops.
Angry that the farmer refused to obey their command, the herders got into a heated verbal argument with him. Without warning, one of the aggressive herders pulled out a long, sharp machete and struck the farmer repeatedly, completely severing his hand from his arm.

The attackers quickly ran away into the nearby bush, leaving the poor farmer bleeding heavily on the bare ground until kind neighbors and residents rushed to his rescue and took him to the hospital.
Explaining the sad event and describing the quick response from emergency workers and community members, witnesses gave clear statements to local news reporters.
Describing how the violent attack took place on the farm field, a community witness stated that “the farmer was working peacefully on his land when the herders came with their cows, and when one cow fell, they ordered him to help lift it”.
Highlighting the exact reason for the cutlass attack on the helpless victim, the eyewitness added that “because the farmer refused and complained that their cows were destroying his farm crops, the herder got angry, brought out a machete, and chopped off his hand completely”. Military personnel and police units are currently sweeping the area to arrest the runaway attackers.
